"Supersadness Intl.“ - the first solo album of Rudi Maier (aka Burkini Beach) - sets the scene for a sad world. The 26-year-old tells of self-doubt, depression and failed relationships in utter directness. At the same time there is always enough self-irony and black humour that it doesn’t sound whiny or even cliché.

Maier spent the last few years as the singer and guitarist of the bone-crushing Indie-Punk-Duo The Dope. In this time the band released two highly acclaimed albums and toured with bands like Warpaint, Band of Skulls, Cursive, etc. But that's just one side of Maier. The other side shows his love of frangibility, clever storytelling, gentle melodies and low-key pop hooks.

Maier began to work as a producer and spent some time in London. It was here that he began to collect first ideas for his solo project Burkini Beach. „When I began working on these songs, I had no intention of showing them to anyone, let alone release them. It was just pastime, practice and therapy for myself“, Maier says. In the end though, he decided to share his songs with the world and record a full album.

The arrangements on "Supersadness Intl." are deliberately meager and instrumentation is kept sparse. „I wanted to avoid falling into the kitsch trap at all costs“, says Maier. „With singer-songwriter / acoustic-guitar-stuff it's always a thin line between cheesy and okay.“ In this case, a claustrophobic gem emerged, which is reminiscent of genre heroes like Elliott Smith, Mark Kozelek or Sufjan Stevens. "Supersadness Intl." is an atmospherically dense work of sometimes painful intensity, which Maier, however, can always break open with mischievous pleasure and with the use of textual and musical pointers.

The production itself was a very intimate process as well. Maier recorded most of the songs alone in his small flat in Berlin. Friend and companion Simon Frontzek (Tomte, Sir Simon) contributed piano and mixed the album. Mastering was done by Doug van Sloun, who has worked with bands like Bright Eyes, Kings of Convenience and First Aid Kit.

After some pre-release singles - including "The World At Our Fingertips", which has reached more than 300,000 Spotify plays - the full album "Supersadness Intl." will be released on May 19th. Self-published, of course - the only conceivable channel for such a personal album.
